Explanation of Logo
Founded 1st December 2002, ERT Search and Rescue was formerly known as "Oxfordshire Search and Rescue" or "OSAR." Whilst working in London during 2004 the team received many comments about "Why is Oxfordshire in London?"  Although some charities from Oxfordshire, like OXFAM, work in London - it seemed strange to some to see that on the vehicles and on uniforms. Many thought that their Search and Rescue response was only in Oxfordshire.

In fact the ERT SAR response and membership, although Headquartered in Oxfordshire is actually a National and International one - so the name was changed from OSAR or Oxfordshire Search and Rescue, in 2006.

The name "ERT" or the "Emergency Response Team",was a suggestion from a Police Officer.  So ERT Search and Rescue was born from OSAR and as ERT enters their 6th year there are many moves afoot to have teams not only all over the UK, trained and able to respond to the emergency services, but also abroad - with 3 country teams in application.

Flooding and swiftwater conditions caused ERT Search and Rescue to mobilise for various Search and Rescue operations over several days.

(Photo courtesy of the Henley Standard Newspaper)

During the extreme currents in the river Thames the environment agency posted the Red Boards up at the locks in Henley.  The ERT Marine Unit were urgently called when the Steward's enclosure from the Henley Regatta came loose and travelled down the river at speed.  ERT control section, were called, and informed that the long stilts were like torpedoes, coming loose and shooting downstream witrh the fast moving current.  One vessel was even damaged as it pierced its hull.  2 marine unit boats were
dispatched and caught up and attached lines to the structure and towed it to the bank.  However, as the floods has caused the banks to burst the challenge was to find suitable ways to anchor the large structure safely so that it would not break away and cause any more damage.  This was one of several rescue operations the ERT Serach and Rescue - Marine Unit members dealt with during the flooding on the weekend.

ERT NEED YOUR DONATIONS - PLEASE HELP SUPPORT US!

Our thanks to Indespension (National Trailer Company, Reading) and Tesco's Stores for their kind support and donations to us, the community and emergency services during these times.

DIAGRAMATIC MODEL

ERT SAR has a liaison and network with UK (i.e., Police, DfID (Dept. for International Development) Fire Service, Ambulance, etc.,) and abroad (i.e., United Nations OCHA / UNCM Coord / GDACS etc.,) as well as trying to build bridges with other SAR teams both paid professionals and unpaid volunteers.  ERT has Technical Rescue teams and is developing competencies in many listed SAR subjects above.  ALL members receive orientation and familiarization in these SAR subjects however specialization can take many years in just one discipline.  ERT Search and Rescue adopt NFPA standards in Tech Rescue.

Welcome to ERT - Search and Rescue.

ERT - Search and Rescue is a registered charity and NGO (Non Government Organization) that utilizes the many disciplines of Search and Rescue to provide a Service of locating and saving lives in the UK and abroad.  In many ways ERT looks like and operates like a traditional but modern Civil Defence or Civil Protection organization.

ERT is also an umbrella body for other Resilience SAR Teams.

ERT is an an acronym for "Emergency Response Team."

INTRODUCTION

Its primary purpose is one of resilience and preparedness for supporting the country and authorities in times of emergency or disaster.  It has an active UK Operational Team made up of highly skilled volunteers and specializing in domestic and international disaster and emergency management and cross training in multi SAR (Search and Rescue) disciplines.

ERT also offers SAR training courses as an umbrella body to member teams and individuals.  (See "Training Courses" for more details or e-mail to request a training calendar.)

The subject is Search and Rescue is very broad with many disciplines.

The ethos of ERT is to invite a networking between other members of the SAR community nationally and internationally and support that community.

ERT is unique as a Emergency Preparedness and Disaster Management / Resilience Search and Rescue Organization which cross trains in several SAR Disciplines and various Civil Defence and Civil Protection subjects.  This is not just like the old British model of Civil Defence post war / Cold war era - but a modern version protecting and preparing against othet threats and peacetime threats and hazards.  This would include flooding, or awareness of things like cyber crime and the recent concerns of bird flu and an influenza type panemic.   ERT is not just focused in one subject area of SAR or one geographical area.  ERT is keen to build bridges with other SAR professionals and Civil Defence / Civil Protection organizations in the UK and Internationally. ERT already has visited and trained with other such groups such as the Singapore Civil Defence Force and the Civil Defence (sivilforsvaret) in Norway and the Pakistan Civil Defence - for example.  ERT has 3 types of ‘affiliated’ person or group and 5 levels of Operational Member.  ERT also offers financial grants to other Operational Member teams.
