UK and Canadian team members complete another USAR Operators Course in Toronto, CA
Members of the UK and Canadian ERTSAR teams completed a USAR ‘Collapsed Structure Rescue’ Operators course in Toronto, Canada, this May taught by Damian Cameron and Gary Foo, with a disaster medical component taught by Dr Rocco Lombardi. The course was supported by companies DIMERSAR, RONA, DELSAR / Con-Space, PARATECH, EXECUTEK.
Exercises and training covered practical use of Paratech for shoring unstable structures, cribbing, breaking and breaching reinforced concrete and cutting through rebar, lifting and moving using levers and mechanical advantage systems. Search and technical search techniques included use of DELSAR and Searchcam plus real-to-life search scenarios.
The theory of USAR was also an integral part of the course, covering safety and PPE, the stages of rescue, INSARAG and LEMA guidelines and markings, types of collapse, and much more. Medical considerations including treatment and triage for rescuers was also a strong focus. The course also covered the UN coordination system for disaster response, such as the roles of UNDAC, OSOCC and LEMA.
